That seems like a tall order doesn’t it? To inform you of the most important thing in your life today. The reason this is a tall order is because you have a lot of important things to do today.
Get the kids ready. Get yourself ready. Make it to the appointment on time. Make that important phone call. Get the groceries. Meet with a client. Take someone special to lunch. Have coffee at your favorite coffee shop. Catch up on your latest Netflix binge. Pick the kids up from school. Fix supper. Pay the bills. Go on a date. Study for that test. Get some sleep.
Our lives are filled with a lot of things. Many of them are very important things that have to get done! However, could we be so busy in our lives that we could actually miss out on the most important thing today?
There is this scene that takes place in Luke 10. Jesus is entering a village and a woman named Martha invites Him into her house. As Jesus enters the house, Mary, Martha’s sister, sits at His feet and listens to His teaching. However, during this time Martha is making sure the house is spotless. She is in full-fledged cleaning mode. The Bible says, “She was distracted with much serving.” While she is cleaning, she sees her sister just sitting and not helping. Her blood begins to boil as she asks Jesus to do something about it.
She went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion.” -(Luke 10:40-42)
Did you notice Jesus’ response? He told Martha that she had it all backwards. Actually the most important thing was not to clean for Jesus, but to fellowship with Jesus. Martha was so business serving that she was missing the most important thing. Now is service to the Lord and His Kingdom important? Absolutely! Service is not only good but it’s essential! However, it is not the most important thing, intimacy with Christ is. And properly understood, our intimacy is to fuel our ministry. Not the other way around. Vance Pitman said this, “Jesus’ primary concern is not ministry but intimacy.”
There is nothing in our schedule today that is more important than time spent at our Savior’s feet. This is a truth that I have to constantly remind myself. The thing that I need most today is time in His presence.
I have a painting hanging in my office that my dad painted for me when I was in high school. It is a picture of me sitting at the feet of Jesus. I am thankful my dad painted it for me because it is a constant reminder of what is most important. I have found that my biggest fight during the day is to stop and be with Christ! I can be praying and then immediately something comes to my mind that I need to do or some ministry opportunity. My old youth minister, Deanna, used to say,”If the devil can’t make you bad, he will make you busy.”
I believe that we have become too busy and what’s needed in our lives is to slow down and be with Christ. For us to have unhindered and uninterrupted time at His feet. I want to encourage you to not miss the most important thing. So today, stop. Spend time with the Creator of the Universe and enjoy Him! Sit at His feet, read His word, seek His will! Because there is nothing more important than that.
